# Introduction

Mental health is how we think, feel, behave, cope and relate. It
moves along a line from ordinary strain to illness that needs a clinic.
Most of us will touch that line at some point in a lifetime, in
ourselves or in someone we love.

The book has ten volumes so that a tired reader can pick one
door.

**Volume 1** names the field, the helpers, the brain,
the chemicals and emotion.

**Volume 2** stays with the senses, stress, anxiety and
low mood.

**Volume 3** opens trauma, severe mood conditions,
psychosis, personality and the stages of life.

**Volume 4** is the practical house: sleep, food,
movement, therapy, medicines, a day’s routine, family help and what to
do when the night is dangerous.

**Volume 5** goes deeper into the senses, the elements,
body chemistry, advanced conditions and a joined view of mind and
body.

**Volume 6** reads the Hindu traditions as a psychology
of the mind, not as a replacement for a clinic. Why this book is given
and not sold is explained at the end of the book.

**Volume 7** gathers the wider circle of care:
addiction, eating, neurodiversity, digital life, work and study,
pregnancy, later life, rights and stigma, and adds two chapters on how
conditions are assessed and on relationships.

**Volume 8** is *Test Your Knowledge*: every
question and quiz for every chapter, with answers. It is not for credit;
it is for care.

**Volume 9** is Stories from Real Life: for every
chapter, several short stories about what the topic looks like in
everyday life, how to recognise it, probable causes, what to do, whom to
consult, dos and don’ts, and how to behave and talk.

**Volume 10** is the companion guide: maps, thinkers,
how to use the book, a glossary, answers to common questions,
quick-reference tables, a workbook, resources, myths and facts, and a
thirty-day challenge.

Throughout the book you will meet small, coloured boxes. Teal boxes
hold notes and key ideas; amber boxes invite you to try something; sand
boxes hold short true-to-life stories; rose boxes carry safety
information; and parchment boxes carry a verse, with its sound and its
meaning. Diagrams and body sketches appear wherever a picture explains
faster than a paragraph.
